DEKALB COUNTY – October 13, 2026. After two successful seasons of bringing professional Shakespeare to the Avondale Estates Town Green, the popular community series formerly known as A Shakespeare Happening is entering an exciting new chapter.
Following last weekend’s extreme weather, the October 10 performance was postponed, and a new date has now been established for The Taming of the Shrew on November 7, 2026.
Building on the success of its first two seasons, the newly branded Shakespeare at Sunset Series continues its partnership with the City of Avondale Estates and is proudly powered by the Office of DeKalb County Commissioner Ted Terry, Super District 6. Produced by Nicole Sage through Bard x Sage PR, the series continues to make professional Shakespeare accessible to all audiences. Together, these partners continue to activate the Avondale Estates Town Green as a vibrant gathering place for culture, community, and connection.
“Investing in free arts programming is an investment in community, culture, and the quality of life that makes DeKalb County such a special place to live,” said Commissioner Ted Terry. “Seeing how the community has embraced live theater at the Avondale Estates Town Green over the past two seasons has been incredibly rewarding. I am proud to continue to support Shakespeare at Sunset and remain committed to promoting the arts in DeKalb County.”
“We’re excited to welcome Shakespeare back to the Town Green as Avondale Estates begins its centennial celebration,” said Avondale Estates City Manager Patrick Bryant. “It’s especially fitting to host Shakespeare in our community, whose founders found inspiration in Stratford-upon-Avon. Shakespeare at Sunset is a wonderful nod to that history, while also creating a fun, accessible experience for families and residents to enjoy together.”
The inaugural fall 2025 season and spring 2026 season were presented in collaboration with the Atlanta Shakespeare Company, whose talented artists established the series and laid the foundation for the continued growth and success of this beloved community tradition.
“This season’s performances have been rescheduled to begin at sunset, creating a more comfortable outdoor experience and an even more captivating theatrical atmosphere as audiences enjoy Shakespeare in the outdoors the way Shakespeare intended,” said Nicole Sage of Bard x Sage PR. “We are excited to collaborate with a new theater group, the Georgia Classic Theatre, to present this beloved performance series in a brand-new light.”
The 2026 Fall Series will feature a new collaboration with Georgia Classic Theatre. Founded by longtime Shakespeare actor and director Allen O’Reilly, the company features many accomplished artists whose careers include performances with the former Georgia Shakespeare which operated at Oglethorpe University from 1985 until 2014, continuing a rich tradition of classical theatre in metro Atlanta.
